Your vehicle’s auxiliary battery is a secondary 12V battery used to power electrical accessories that require a consistent 12 volts to operate and/or electrical components that can be affected by voltage spikes and drops.

Auxiliary batteries vary in shape and size, can be located in the engine bay, rear cargo compartment, or even under a seat, and are wired in parallel to the main battery to isolate connected electrical accessories and keep them powered even when your vehicle is turned off.

Signs of a Failing BMW Auxiliary Battery
Failed auxiliary batteries can leave vehicle functions like electronic steering assist, radar controlled cruise control, central locking systems, and even emergency braking systems inoperable. The auxiliary battery often controls electronic safety features therefore warning lights and messages are usually displayed on your vehicle’s display at start that cannot be cleared until the battery is replaced.

Replacing a BMW Auxiliary Battery
Due to their varying locations, auxiliary batteries can take anywhere from 15 minutes to 2 hours to replace and often require programming to your vehicle’s ECM or PCM to function correctly. Furthermore, it is highly recommended to replace your vehicle’s auxiliary battery whenever your vehicle’s main battery requires replacement due to the additional electrical strain a failed main battery places on the auxiliary battery.
